Cowrie began as my thesis project for fashion school in 2020. What started as a project meant for a few jury members, soon turned into a thriving community of followers and customers. For our community of "Cowrie Cuties," the label became more than just clothing—it evolved into a symbol of uncompromising, euphoric self-expression and body positivity. I would have customers writing to me everyday to tell me how much they loved their Cowrie garments, and how wonderful it was to finally have clothes made especially for them.
In 2023, I hit a slump and could no longer manage operations by myself, but I loved Cowrie so much that I couldn't bring myself to trust anyone to help me. I decided, the best thing to do would be to take a break (for the first time in two years!) I took this time to travel and gather inspiration. During this time, I also took on a fulltime job so that I could continue to be financially independent.
A few months into 2024, after a lot of deliberation and an intense longing to go back to doing what I love most and do best–making clothes–I asked my elder sisters Namaah and Devika for guidance and advice. They quickly decided that if support is what I needed to take Cowrie to the next level, then they would do their best big-sister duties and join me in shaping the future of Cowrie Collective.
Together, we’ve always shared a deep appreciation for all things design, Indian crafts and the seamless integration of traditional with contemporary, be it in architecture, painting techniques, jewellery, or our favourite, clothing! Our mission is to celebrate and sustain age-old techniques and infusing them with contemporary flair, ensuring our designs honour both the past and the present.
Of all traditional Indian textile printing and weaving techniques, Hand block printing is the one closest to our hearts. It is an intricate craft where detailed designs are carved into wooden blocks, dipped in natural dyes, and meticulously stamped onto fabric by skilled artisans. Each print is unique, a testament to the artisan's skill and dedication. These local artisans pass this craft down from generation to generation, and can only be done by hand; sometimes a single motif can consist of anywhere between one to as many as twelve blocks which are layered one over the other. This is a time and labour intensive craft, but the rise of digitally-printed fabrics with block-print-inspired motifs has led to a disheartening decline in the viability of the traditional technique.
Our vision goes beyond being just another clothing line. Cowrie is a tribute to the artisans who pour their heart and soul into every piece they create. We are committed to supporting these craftsmen, ensuring that their artistry continues to flourish in a modern world. By blending traditional fabrics with contemporary designs, we strive to offer unique, timeless, and versatile slow fashion. Join us on our journey to make the slow fashion movement a truly sustainable one.

Why Cowrie?
Cowrie shells have served as currency and held cultural significance in rituals across civilisations worldwide. Symbolising fertility and good fortune, they’ve long been used in jewellery, divination, and board games. For us, Cowrie embodies a rich tapestry of connotations, symbolising not only prosperity and growth but also playfulness and finding joy in the small and seemingly insignificant.
